British Virgin Islands an increasingly popular domicile for AIM listed companies

Posted: 14 April 2008

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are becoming increasingly popular for the registration of non-UK companies listing on London's Alternative Investment Market (AIM).

A report released by Hemscott reveals that the BVI is now the 4th most popular country of registration for non-UK AIM 100 companies by company count, and 3rd most popular by market capitalization.

Acceptance of the BVI as a sophisticated jurisdiction is now global and appreciation of the use and benefits of BVI incorporated companies is also worldwide. The jurisdiction's popularity for AIM companies comes down to its flexible regulatory regime and sophisticated corporate legislation, which has over the years attracted more than 800,000 companies to the BVI, making it the most popular offshore IBC jurisdiction in the world.

"BVI companies are proving to be reliable vehicles for AIM listings that enjoy considerable investor confidence. We're seeing a substantial increase in the amount of AIM work coming through the doors." Says Harney Westwood & Riegels partner Leonard Birmingham.

Harneys has good reason to be upbeat about the market's enthusiasm for BVI companies. The firm, which is regularly ranked as the leading law firm in the BVI by the independent legal directories, is proving to be a favorite among AIM-bound clients. It now represents 80% of the AIM 100 companies registered in the BVI and was a newcomer to the AIM 100 legal list this year along with City heavyweights such as Freshfield Bruckhaus Derringer, Lovells and Olswang.
